Form does not precede meaning

Form does not precede meaning

Design as a discipline of perception

Design is not the pursuit of beauty for its own sake. Beauty is not a design objective, it is the natural consequence of an order in which form, function, culture and meaning reach a recognisable balance.

This is why I see design as a constant opposition to everything that distorts the perception of value, and as a continuous search for perceptual authenticity.

Design does not add value out of nothing, it removes whatever prevents value from surfacing.

For over eighteen years I have been designing identity systems, brand strategies and visual languages. My work moves between Brand Identity, Visual Strategy and Creative Direction, with a focus on Fashion and Luxury Communication: contexts in which perception is one of a company's principal assets.

Before form

My path began long before the profession. Before design came drawing, construction, the modelling of matter and the observation of form. Later, studies in Architecture and Art and a specialisation in Design and Visual Communication at IED in Rome turned that natural inclination into a design method founded on analysis, on synthesis and on the responsibility of choice.

Over the course of my career I have worked as Art Director with national and international agencies and companies, contributing to projects for brands such as Gucci, Lacoste, L'Arianna Shoes and Caffè Moreno.

For Caffè Moreno I worked as storyteller and strategist on several advertising campaigns, building narratives consistent with the brand's identity heritage.

A method built across disciplines

My idea of design has its origins in the Renaissance approach of Leonardo da Vinci, in the methodological rigour of Enzo Mari and Massimo Vignelli, in David Ogilvy's ability to turn observation into strategy, in the use of communication as a cultural stance expressed by Oliviero Toscani, and in the search for the essential that shaped Steve Jobs's design thinking.

I do not treat these references as a repertoire to be quoted. They are directions of thought, and together they define a method that combines observation, discipline, culture and the capacity for synthesis. Form never precedes meaning, it is always its consequence.

Every choice must be defensible

This is why every design choice must be defensible. Typography is not selected for its apparent style, but for the historical and cultural heritage it carries: every type family has a voice, a memory and a precise semantic intention.

Colour is not chosen by personal taste. It is assessed through colour theory, visual perception and the relationships it builds with context, positioning and audience.

Composition organises thought before it organises the image. Visual hierarchy, rhythm, proportion, space and the principles of Gestalt are the instruments through which a message becomes legible, authoritative and memorable.

A project takes shape when every element stops being decoration and takes on a function within a system.

Building identities

A solid identity does not come from the sum of aesthetically pleasing solutions. It comes from the coherence between what a brand is, what it declares and what people perceive.

This is why I never start from a blank page. I start by listening to the story, the market and the ambitions of the person in front of me. I analyse, I synthesise, then I design.

I do not design surfaces, I build stories that become identities.

A brand that is merely seen is forgotten. A brand that is told is remembered, recognised and chosen.
